"ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTES"
"The thousands of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals [beneficial plant compounds] in whole foods act synergistically together to create a more powerful effect than the sum of their parts, producing a result which cannot be recreated by supplements," says Jeff Prince, vice president for education at the American Institute for Cancer Research."

"That is not to say that supplements are of no use. They can be of great benefit, when taken based on individualized needs. Most nutrition experts recommend a daily multivitamin and mineral tablet for everyone. But supplements simply can't compete with better food choices."

"Researchers are working as fast as we can to find the most effective components in foods," says Janet Novotny, research physiologist at USDA's Human Nutrition Research Center in Beltsville. "But so far, studies have shown that while fruits and vegetables are associated with decreased risk of chironic desease, studies of the isolated compounds in fruits and vegetables haven't shown an effect."
From The Washington Post 8/25/04 pp.F1-2.

EXERCISE TO REDUCE INJURY RISK
"...the incidence of overuse injuries sustained by young athletes could be reduced by 50% if more emphasis was placed on the development of fundamental fitness abilities before sports participation."

"...the National Athletic Trainers' Association suggests that high school athletes engage in conditioning activities at least six weeks before the start of practice."
Faigenbaum, A., Schram, J. Can Resistance Training Reduce Injuries in Youth Sports? Strength and Conditioning Journal 26(3) p18. 2004.

The concept of "pre-habilitation" exercise training is now becoming well- known amoung coaches involved in sports performance preparation as well as chiropractors and therapists involved in treatment of repetitive motion injuries (carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, etc.). These exercises will correct postural, strength and flexibility imbalances. Remember, you must get in shape to play a sport, not play a sport to stay in shape.
