FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT ASSESSMENT
"The Functional Movement Screen is the foundation of our program. Everything we do builds off of it. We couldn't imagine not using this program."
—Jon Torine, Head Strength Coach, Indianapolis Colts

Movement is not just muscles moving bones. Movement involves an exchange of information between the brain, spinal cord, and muscles. Assessment of the components of this system (posture, strength, flexibility, balance) and how they work together (movement) can pinpoint the weak links in the system. Based on the findings, corrective exercises can be recommended as a starting point. Once the body is balanced, a total fitness program can be designed and performed.

You must correct the problem areas when you first start your fitness program. Otherwise, you will continue to foster imbalances and deficiencies in your movement mechanics and be much more susceptible to injury.

The Functional Movement Assessment is a screening process that identifies individuals who have poor movement patterns. These poor movement patterns are caused by muscle strength and flexibility imbalances. These imbalances in turn can cause compensatory changes in multiple areas of the body resulting in "energy leakage" and increase the potential for injury.

Identification and correction of these imbalances is the first line of defense in injury prevention. For example, you may have very flexible hamstrings (rear thigh), but very tight quadriceps (front thigh). Or, you may have developed very strong pectoral muscles, but have very weak (and tight) upper back muscles. If these problems are not corrected, greater imbalances will ultimately be developed and injury will most likely occur.

The body should be free of restrictions and free of imbalances PRIOR to training, fitness, and sports competition! These restrictions, imbalances, and poor movement patterns "drastically distort motor learning, movement perception, body awareness, and mechanics. They rob the body of efficiency and are very often hidden by those individuals who learn to compensate and substitute with other movement patterns." From Functional Movement.com

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is performed on ALL clients in our facility. A specific corrective exercise program is designed for each client based on the findings of the FMS which pinpoint the weak links and assign exercises to correct them.

Dear Dr. Horwitz,
Yesterday I shoveled that white “concrete” from my driveway for about 3+ hours. I feel fine, aside from some very minor muscle tightness. My back is totally normal. I could never have done it without your advice over the years. Thanks again,
Doug Verner

Dear Dr. Horwitz,
I have never been a very athletic person. But, a little over a year ago, for health reasons, I decided to start using the elliptical machine that was gathering dust in the basement. When I first started, I could barely manage 10 minutes at the lowest setting before my legs were hurting. However, I knew I could not give up. So, gradually I increased the time and then the level until now I am able to easily manage 30 minutes at the highest level. My goal is to use the machine for 30 minutes every night, but I occasionally miss due to meetings or other commitments. However, I never exercise fewer than 5 nights per week. And, on those nights that I don't exercise, I can feel the difference! My overall energy level is lower, my stress level is higher, and I just generally feel worse than on the nights I do exercise. I won't lie - it is not my favorite activity, but I recognize its importance for my health, so I do it.

Thanks,
P.T.
