INTRODUCING MI SEITELMAN: DIRECTOR OF FUNCTIONAL TRAINING, CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER

Mi's experience with chiropractic care and rehabilitative exercise for his back pain and functional exercise and proper nutrition for weight loss is quite inspirational. Here is Mi's letter to me about his wonderful transformation:

"Dear Steve,

From the “Fat Elvis” to your assistant and the Functional Training Director of your Maryland Sports Injury Center...The circle has come completely around!

Who would have guessed when 4 years ago when I was 45 lbs overweight and could barely walk ito your office (which I did thanks to a referral from our friend Jimmy G) that my life would be so changed. I was in such pain that just walking made me cry, my general health was a total mess, I was what you said...fat, had horrible posture and yes, I was getting old. You said you could fix my pain, and you did, you showed me how to get back into get back into shape and although my chronological age is 57, I feel 15 years younger...IT WORKED.

Over two years ago I made a decision that I needed to complete the change in my life, by doing something that would not only make me feel better about myself...It would help people too. So, I left a job I had been in for 10 years, to go back to school to become a health professional. Based on your recommendation, I enrolled in the National Academy of Sports Medicine’s (NASM) Personal Training program. After nearly a year of intense study I passed the final exam, and then found work in a local gym as a personal trainer. For over a year I was able to work with a broad range of clients from 87 year old seniors to 11 year old overweight children, all the while thinking about what I should do next.

Then you made me the offer to come into your office as a trainer and I knew that I had really arrived! I feel as though I have been given the opportunity of lifetime and look forward to helping you, help your patients to attain better health...Thanks for everything!

FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT ASSESSMENT
The Functional Movement Assessment is a screening process that identifies individuals who have poor movement patterns. These poor movement patterns are caused by muscle strength and flexibility imbalances. These imbalances in turn can cause compensatory changes in multiple areas of the body resulting in "energy leakage" and increase the potential for injury. Identification and correction of these imbalances is the first line of defense in injury prevention. For example, you may have very flexible hamstrings (rear thigh), but very tight quadriceps (front thigh). Or, you may have developed very strong pectoral muscles, but have very weak (and tight) upper back muscles. If these problems are not corrected, greater imbalances will ultimately be developed and injury will most likely occur.

The body should be free of restrictions and free of imbalances PRIOR to training, fitness, and sports competition! These restrictions, imbalances, and poor movement patterns "drastically distort motor learning, movement perception, body awareness, and mechanics. They rob the body of efficiency and are very often hidden by those individuals who learn to compensate and substitute with other movement patterns." (from FMS website linked below).

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is performed on ALL clients in our facility. A specific corrective exercise program is designed for each client based on the findings of the FMS which pinpoint the weak links and assign exercises to correct them.
